Tech Ignorance in Teens despite lofty ambitions

Tech Ignorance Keeps Teens From Changing the World - Chronicle.com

The second article is from the Chronicle of Higher Education. Actually it is a brief commentary that refers to the first report from MIT which suggests that American teens are "...confident in their inventiveness [but aware that they are]... unprepared for careers in technology and engineering." This seems to correlate with earlier data that suggests that American students are increasingly unprepared for careers in science and technology and that schools (beginning with primary education) are decreasing emphasis on these skills.

It's a fascinating study that in the larger context, can be taken to support the position that young Americans today, while technologically adept, are not inventive enough or do not possess enough training for the type of intelligence that goes into developing scientific innovations - that we are increasingly a consumerist (expert) society that thrives on it's consumption of high tech gadget and goodies, ever seeking places to do good with these things but not possessing enough innovative minds to make those changes happen.
